These beans are
"Shade-grown," which means they were planted in the shade of tall
trees,
making these coffee plantations excellent homes for birds
(bird-friendly) and
other forest-dwelling wildlife. More
than half of the traditional shade-grown coffee farms in Latin America have been cleared of trees and
converted to
"sun-coffee" (planted under full or nearly full sun conditions) farms
to increase production. Growing “sun coffee” requires the use of
synthetic
fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to counter the effects of
eliminating
the shaded forestry system to plant the beans.
